2 Mins read

Mango dal is an eternal favourite in our house. I learnt making this dish from my mother-in-law. It’s a simple easy to make recipe and incorporates the flavours of a typical andhra style dal recipe. Maximum flavour with minimum ingredients..that is the andhra style mango dal for you.

So here is the list of ingredients you would require to make the all time favourite mango dal

Raw mango                                 – 1 medium sized. (Peel the skin, chop into small pieces and keep aside)

Tuar dal /kandi pappu/yellow lentil  – 1 cup

Salt                                          – to taste

Chilli powder                             – to taste

For the tempering

Mustard seeds/ avalu                -1/4 tsp

Cumin seeds/jeelakarra/jeera    – 1/2 tsp

Dry red chillies/endu mirchi      – 2 to 3 broken

Asafoetida/inguva/hing              -a pinch or a dash

Turmeric/pasupu/haldi            – a pinch

Green chillies                         – 2 to 3 finely chopped or as per taste

Curry leaves/karivepaku          – a few.

The first step to making mango dal is boiling the dal and mangoes. This can be done in two methods:

You can boil the dal along with the mango pieces in a pressure cooker until the dal is cooked. But sometimes the sourness of the mango can interfere with the boiling process of the dal resulting in partially cooked dal. To avoid this it is always better to cook dal and mango seperately. Just cook the dal like you would normally. Add two cups of water to one cup of dal in pressure cooker and cook till done. You can boil the mango pieces until done either on stove top or microwave.

Once the dal and mangoes are ready, mix them together, add salt and chilli powder mix and allow to rest for sometime so that all the flavours can incorporate into each other.

Heat oil in a kadhai or a pan. When the oil is warm enough add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and allow to splutter. Add the broken red chillies allow to fry for a few seconds. Now add hing and turmeric. Next add the green chillies and curry leaves.

Add the dal and mango mixture, turn the heat to low and allow to boil for a couple of minutes mixing well.

Adjust salt and chilli powder and allow to cook for some more time.

Serve hot with rice and ghee.

The sourness of the mango, the heat from the chilli powder and chillies form a perfect flavour combination.
